Moving house up the hill: Dehradun to Mussoorie

If you are looking for packers and movers for Mussoorie from Dehradun, the kilometres are the easy part. It is roughly 30 to 35 km up the hill, past the Mussoorie Diversion and Kuthal Gate. What decides how the day goes is the last road to your door, the weather on the climb, and how many tourists are heading the same way. This guide from Agarwal Packers and Movers, based at Race Course in Dehradun, covers what we plan for and what is worth telling us early.

Shifting to Mussoorie

Why the last road matters more than the load

In the city, the amount you own decides the truck. On a hill house shifting, the narrowest bend or steepest lane near your home decides it, and the load follows.

  • A vehicle sized for the road

The main road up is wide enough for most goods vehicles, but many homes sit off it on narrow, steep lanes with tight turns. If a large truck cannot reach your area, a smaller vehicle may make more than one trip, or goods move from a large truck to a smaller one at a wider point. If the main road is shut, the Kimadi route is narrow and slow, so we would rather wait than force a big vehicle up it.

  • The final stretch on foot

Many cottages and older houses, especially around Landour and the slopes below Camel's Back Road, have no vehicle access to the door at all. The last part is carried by hand, sometimes up or down a long run of steps. That carry often sets the crew size.

  • Parking and entry points

Around Library Chowk, Kulri and the Mall Road, space to stop a goods vehicle is limited, and vehicle movement on parts of the Mall is controlled. Rules and timings change, so check locally or with your landlord or society; we plan the vehicle's timing around whatever applies on the day.

  • Weather on the climb

From July to September, heavy rain can bring landslides that close the road for hours or longer. In January, fog, ice and the odd snowfall slow things down higher up. Either way, a backup date saves a rushed move.

Picking a date

Timing a move between Dehradun and Mussoorie

The same road carries holiday traffic for much of the year. A few choices keep the goods vehicle out of the worst of it. The month-by-month moving calendar covers the wider picture.

  • 1Avoid weekends and long weekends

Friday evening to Sunday, and any long weekend, bring heavy traffic up the hill and queues near Kuthal Gate and Library Chowk. A Tuesday or Wednesday is far easier.

  • 2Start early

Leaving Dehradun early means the climb and the carry happen before day-trippers fill the road and before afternoon cloud rolls in.

  • 3Be flexible in the monsoon

July to September is the riskiest stretch for landslides. A move can still happen, but keep a second date ready and expect a call the evening before.

  • 4Watch January

Fog and cold mornings slow the drive, and snow can close roads higher up, particularly towards Dhanaulti.

  • 5Spring and autumn are kindest

March to early April and October to November usually give dry roads and clear days, outside the peak holiday weeks.

Packing for the hills

Protecting goods from damp and cold

Mussoorie homes stay damp for months, and goods can sit in a cold room for days before they are unpacked. That changes how a few things are packed. Our packing guide has more general detail.

  1. Wood wrapped twice

Wooden furniture gets the usual wrap plus a waterproof outer layer, because a misty carry from the road soaks a single layer quickly.

  2. Mattresses sealed

Mattresses and bedding go in sealed covers. A damp mattress in a cold house takes a long time to dry.

  3. Instruments and electronics

Pianos, guitars, TVs and computers are padded well and best unpacked once the room is dry. Ask a technician whether a piano needs tuning after the move.

Up and down

Moving down from Mussoorie to Dehradun, and other hill moves

Hill moves run both ways. The planning is the same, just in reverse: the carry and loading happen first, at the top, and the drive down follows.

  • Retiring down to Dehradun

Long-time residents often move down for easier winters. Years of furniture and books make the carry the main job.

Tip: sort what is coming before the survey, so the carry is only what you need.

  • Holiday homes

Furnishing a weekend home, clearing one after a sale, or moving pieces between Dehradun and a Landour cottage.

Tip: if no one will be at the hill house, arrange who holds the keys.

  • School and campus staff

Teachers and staff at Mussoorie's boarding schools and institutions often move at term breaks. Campus rules on vehicle entry and move timings vary, so check with your administration first.

Tip: share the campus contact and we will coordinate the timing.

  • Barlowganj, Kempty and Dhanaulti

Barlowganj sits below Mussoorie on its own winding road. Kempty is further on, beyond the town, and Dhanaulti lies along the road towards Tehri, where winter snow is more likely.

Tip: these are planned like any hill move, with photos of the access first.

What it costs

How a hill move is priced

A move to or from Mussoorie is quoted after the survey, because access matters more than distance. The local city ranges on the moving charges page do not apply to hill moves. If the new house is not ready, storage in Dehradun can hold your goods until it is, and a car or scooter can go separately with vehicle transport.

FAQ

Questions about moving to Mussoorie

Can big trucks go to Mussoorie?

Goods vehicles do use the main road up, but many homes are on narrow, steep lanes a large truck cannot reach. We choose the vehicle by the last stretch of road near your home, and use a smaller vehicle or a carry on foot where needed.

Does shifting to Mussoorie cost more than a move within Dehradun?

It usually does, mainly because of the climb, smaller vehicles and the carry from the road to the door. The exact figure comes after a free survey, since access changes the work far more than the 30 to 35 km does. How moving charges work.

How long does a house move from Dehradun to Mussoorie take?

Many household moves finish in a day, starting early in Dehradun. A large home, a long carry on foot, traffic or bad weather can stretch it, and we confirm the plan after the survey.

What is the best time to move to Mussoorie?

Weekdays in spring and autumn, outside long weekends and holiday weeks, are usually easiest. Avoid July to September if you can because of landslides, and expect fog or snow delays in January. Month-by-month guide.

Do packers move households from Mussoorie down to Dehradun?

Yes. Hill moves run both ways, so we plan moves down to Dehradun as well as up the hill. Send photos of the access at the hill home first, so the vehicle and carry can be planned.

Do I need permission for a goods vehicle in Mussoorie?

It depends on where you live. Parts of the Mall Road area, some campuses and certain roads have their own vehicle rules and timings, which can change. Check locally or with your landlord, society or campus office, and we will coordinate the vehicle's timing with them.
