Moving in Dehradun: your questions answered
These are the Dehradun moving questions that reach our Race Course office most often, from the first phone call to the last carton, answered by the team behind our work as packers and movers in Dehradun. Answers are short, and each one points to a fuller guide where we have one. If your question isn't here, ask us directly.
Booking and the survey
What details do I need ready before calling a mover in Dehradun?
Your current locality and floor, the destination, the size of the home and a rough date are enough to start. It also helps to mention a narrow lane, a missing lift or a society with move-in rules, because those change how the job is planned.
How long does a home survey take?
Someone walks through each room, opens the lofts and store rooms, looks at the stairs or lift and checks where a truck can stand. It usually doesn't take long, and you don't need to prepare anything except access to every cupboard you want moved.
Can the survey be done over a video call?
For a small move, such as a single room or a few items, a video walk-through or a set of photos on WhatsApp can work. For a full house a visit is more reliable, since volume and access are easy to misjudge on a phone screen.
Do I have to book after the survey?
No. The survey is free and carries no obligation. Take the written quote, compare it with others, and decide in your own time.
Can I change my moving date after booking?
Call as soon as you know. We'll check which crews and vehicles are free on the new date, and if the change affects anything in the quote we'll tell you before confirming.
Prices and payment
Why do shifting quotes in Dehradun vary so much between companies?
Mostly because they include different things. One quote may cover full packing, dismantling and unpacking, while another covers only loading and the truck. Put the quotes side by side line by line before comparing totals, as our guide to local moving charges explains.
Is GST added to the moving bill?
Our quote and tax invoice show GST; ask for the breakdown if anything is unclear. When comparing movers, check whether each quote is inclusive or exclusive of tax so you compare the same figure.
When do I pay for my move?
Ask for the payment terms in writing before you book. Payment details come only from our office; confirm them on +91 93681 08590 before sending money to anyone.
Does packing my own clothes and books reduce the price?
It usually does, because packing labour and material are a real part of the cost. Clothes, linen and books are safe to pack yourself; leave glass, electronics and furniture to the crew. Our packing guide shows how to do your share properly.
Will the price change on moving day?
It can change only if the items or addresses change from what was surveyed. Tell us about any change beforehand and the quote is updated in writing.
Packing and moving day
Should I be at home while the crew packs?
Yes, or someone you trust should be. You'll want to point out what isn't coming, which cartons hold the first-night essentials, and which room each piece goes to at the new place. Our home shifting guide walks through the day in order.
How are glass, crockery and the TV packed?
Glass and crockery are wrapped piece by piece with bubble wrap and paper, then packed upright in cartons marked fragile. A TV gets padding on the screen and corners and travels in its own carton or a padded wrap if the original box is gone.
What can't go in the moving truck?
Gas cylinders that aren't empty, fuel, paint, acids and other flammable or corrosive items should not travel with household goods. Keep cash, jewellery, important documents and medicines with you rather than in a carton.
Will my beds and wardrobes be put back together?
Yes. Furniture that we take apart for the move is reassembled at the new home, and goods are placed room by room rather than left in a heap by the door.
Can you shift a small office over a weekend?
Yes, office moves are often planned for evenings, Sundays or in phases so work doesn't stop. Desks and equipment are tagged to the new floor plan; read more about office shifting in Dehradun.
I'm a student with a bed and a few cartons. Is that too small a job?
No. Single-room and PG moves around Prem Nagar, Bidholi and Selaqui are routine, and a smaller vehicle often does the job. See our page on student and PG shifting for ways to keep it cheap.
Vehicles, storage and insurance
How is a car prepared before it is transported?
Its condition, including existing scratches and dents, is noted with you at pickup before it goes into a car carrier. Remove valuables and loose items from the cabin first. Details are on our car and bike transport page.
Can my scooter travel in the same truck as my furniture?
Often, yes. A two-wheeler is padded and wrapped, then secured in the truck alongside the household goods, which is usually simpler than sending it separately. Mention it at the survey so space is planned for it.
How much does storage cost in Dehradun?
From ₹5,000 a month, depending on volume and unit size. Our page on storage in Dehradun explains how it works.
Is transit insurance compulsory?
No, it's your choice. Ask for the insurance cost alongside your quote; it is shown as a separate figure so you can weigh it up.
How can I track my goods on a move out of Dehradun?
For moves to other cities through our branch network, you can track your consignment on our main site using the details from your booking. You can also call +91 93681 08590 at any hour for an update.
Areas, timing and hill moves
My society only allows moves at certain hours. Can you work around that?
Yes. Newer apartment blocks around Jogiwala, Sahastradhara Road and GMS Road often restrict move hours and ask for the service lift to be reserved, so check with your RWA and we'll schedule the crew to fit. Our page on society and RWA move rules lists what to ask.
Is it harder to move a house up to Mussoorie?
It takes more planning. Hill roads, sharp bends and little parking near many cottages mean the vehicle is chosen for the road, and goods may be carried for the last stretch. Read moving to Mussoorie before you book.
Which months are worst for shifting in Dehradun?
July to September is the trickiest because of heavy monsoon rain, and month-end dates are busy all year round. Our month-by-month moving calendar helps if your date is flexible.
Do you go to Doiwala, Vikasnagar and Selaqui?
Yes, along with every part of the city and towns such as Rishikesh and Haridwar. Check the full list of areas we serve around Dehradun.
